To comment on the question of the dj/producer/electronic artists. The main thing I want to say is that I love being just a DJ. I'm happy for producers being able to market and perform their works directly for audiences without having to lean on DJ's like they did back in the day to play their tracks. I also think that once the spotlight shifted so did the attitudes and it became that DJ's are lesser than because they play "other people's music". Essentially equating us with what a cover band is to the live music world. That idea is so completely false because great DJ's are tastemakers, and we generally love music just as much as anyone else if not more. The need to DJ comes from sharing music we love with an audience in a compelling way that you can't get from Pandora. It shouldn't require a gimmick, a visual show, a live musician in order to gain credibility with anyone. The only thing we require is open minds hearts and ears and the rest will follow. There's nothing wrong with upping the ante and doing your thing. Go for it. We can all coexist and once upon a time we did that just fine.
To me the main downside of being focused on making music and then going out and performing it is the tendency to become insulated, and semi-self absorbed. I almost never want to go there for the simple fact that I want to be someone who takes time to digest, listen, review and ultimately play the music that people are making and being an advocate for them.
The need for new terminology is really just because people are so busy/ignorant/lazy to try and understand what's being put in front of them. I don't think any updated vocabulary is going to solve that problem. I think having more knowledgeable people in media and music institutions when it comes to dance music would be the best thing to combat and change the mainstreams perceptions of what is what and what isn't. But if we're all too busy trying to make music and be stars and play shows and this and that…….how will we ever get there?
