Last week heads Hip Hoped all up and down Red River. Kool Keith tore up Mohawk in the rain, local cats held down the inside, and TMC turned plush out on the late. You can really take nights like this for granted till you sitting at the bar next month bored as shit feeling all WTF?!
I’ve not been the biggest Kool Keith fan, but he’s definitely earned enough stripes to garner my attention for at least one set. He did his thing, professional grade for sure. UMC’s joints were really a treat, like a little warp to a time most the crowd is too young to remember.
Afterward this cat Blackie opened up the inside. He set it off on the floor amongst the crowd, to much of their confusion and consternation. He was like a one man Afropunk band. All in everybody’s faces screaming, with his little beat machine blaring. I really regret not starting that mosh pit, but it really didn’t seem like anybody else was going to enjoy it, the ladies especially.
The show moved back on stage into a much more conventional format, and I finally got to find out why this guy Bavu’s name is always in everyones mouth, he’s nice! His sound was crispy and clear, and his message was down to earth. A real blue collar M.C.
Kydd Jones closed it, kind of ushering in a new generation, after hearing a pioneer in Keith, and an old soldier in Bavu. If you’re not familiar youtube him, he’s the truth as far as the local creative youngins go. I like, “Where’s the love?” (Peep the throw back video.)
At the end of the night the gang linked up at plush and phucked it up with TMC. Zeale was already warming up the mic when I walked in. Tats and Kid Slice where wearing out the ones and twos. It really was one of those epic nights where it seemed like everybody and their mom’s was in full effect. We busted a few rhymes and talked a whole lot of shit, good times!
Upon walking out I was like, “Man that was phun!“, and Bak was like, “That’s a story“, so now I’m like, “Here it is.”
For your scrutiny.
P.S. Would love to have had more detail but I thought this was long enough.
P.S.S. Pharcyde at Mohawk tonight. Rapid Ric working out with Kid Slyce at Plush.
Same Bat Time, same Bat Channel party people! Watch out now!
Nice one. It was good to hear Tats again. The man still got it! Bavu (“bah-voo”) has been around for years. I remember Hip Hop Humpday at Mercury (now The Parish) back in the day. 4 MCs, all freestyle, all night. As a Hip Hop purist, it’s good to see that Austin still got love for the art form.
